Netflix has announced that production has started on The Rat (working title), a new thriller series from South Korea.
The Rat (wt) is based on the Kakao Entertainment webtoon Field Mouse by ludovico, itself inspired by an old Korean folktale about a rat that transforms into a human by consuming clipped fingernails. (Um, eew.)
In the new thriller series, Moon-jae (Ryu Jun-yeol, Revelations, The 8 Show) is a sociophobic novelist who leads a reclusive life. On a seemingly ordinary day, he discovers that he can’t unlock his phone with his fingerprint. What’s more, his only friend, who has helped him with everything, goes missing. Stripped of his name, identity, money, everything, Moon-jae discovers that a mysterious “rat” has stolen everything from him. Determined to reclaim his life, Moon-jae goes on a journey to uncover the truth.
He also turns to No-ja (Sul Kyung-gu, The Whirlwind, Kill Boksoon), a private investigator, for help in tracking down the rat. These two are not strangers to each other. Three years ago, Moon-jae borrowed money from No-ja, also a loan shark, but disappeared instead of paying it back. No-ja chased him down but didn’t catch him, and now he’s as surprised as anyone that Moon-jae would show his face to him again. While initially focused on getting his money back, No-ja soon gets swept up in Moon-jae’s hunt for the rat.
A co-production of Kakao Entertainment, CJES Studio, and H.House, the series is directed by Kim Hong-sun (Dear Hongrang, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) and written by Lee Jae-gon (A Model Family, Special Affairs Team TEN).
