Netflix announced today the launch date and pricing for its new ad-supported subscription plan.

Netflix’s new lowest-priced plan — the ad-supported plan called Basic with Ads — will launch in the US on Thursday, November 3, at 9am PT/12pm ET. It will cost $6.99/month.

At launch, the ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, and will play both before and during TV shows and films.

Existing Netflix subscribers who maintain their current subscriptions will not be affected by the new plan, which complements the streamer’s existing ad-free Basic ($9.99/month), Standard ($15.49/month), and Premium (19.99/month) plans.

BASIC WITH ADS

Same as Netflix’s Basic plan:

  • A wide variety of TV shows and movies
  • A personalized viewing experience
  • Availability on a wide range of TV and mobile devices
  • Ability to change or cancel your plan at any time

Different from Netflix Basic Plan:

  • Video quality up to 720p/HD
  • An average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour
  • No availability of a limited number of movies and TV shows (due to licensing restrictions, which Netflix is working on)
  • No ability to download titles

Folks who aren’t already subscribers can begin signing up for Basic with Ads on November 3 at Netflix.com; registration requires your email address, date of birth, and gender. (I am only delivering information here, so if you’re upset by any of the requirements, please take it up with Netflix.) Existing subscribers who would like to downgrade their plans to Basic with Ads can do so on the same date.

Basic with Ads will be available in twelve countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US.

  • Australia: launches 4 November; cost will be AU $6.99/month
  • Canada: launches November 1 at 9am PT/12pm ET; cost will be CA $5.99/month
  • UK: launches 3 November at 4pm GMT; cost will be £4.99/month
  • US: launches November 3 at 9am PT/12pm ET; cost will be US $6.99/month
  • Contact Netflix for Basic with Ads launch dates and pricing for other countries.
