Folks in the States who’ve been waiting for the original Quebecois version of 19-2, rejoice! The French-language cop drama series arrives in the US in a few days.
Before non-English-language shows became as well-received as they are now by masses of viewers in the US, we were fortunate to get English-language remakes of international series, such as The Bridge, the American-Mexican version of the Swedish-Danish crime thriller Bron/Broen, and In Treatment, the American version of the Israeli drama BeTipul. More recently we’ve gotten the British series Ten Percent, a remake of the French comedy-drama Dix pour cent, better known as Call My Agent!.
Seven years ago, stateside viewers were introduced to 19-2, the English-language Canadian remake of the French-language Canadian cop drama series 19-2. The remake premiered in the US in January 2016 on Acorn TV and became a hit for the streaming service.
The original Quebecois 19-2, created by Réal Bossé (Clash) and Claude Legault (Fatale-Station), stars Bossé and Legault as Nick Berrof and Ben Chartier, patrol officers in Montreal. The show’s focus is on the professional and personal lives of the officers at Poste 19 of the (fictitious) Service Police Metropolitan, and the challenges they deal with in both. In addition to police chases, internal investigations, staffing issues and the like, storylines feature threads about Ben’s estrangement from his family, Nick’s post-divorce struggles, and colleagues who have issues with alcohol, physical abuse, and more.
Like its English-language remake in the Lower 48, the award-winning 19-2 en français is a fan-favorite series north of the border. Maybe it will be in the US, too.
The original French-Canadian 19-2 premieres in the US on Monday, February 27, on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
