This looks like so much fun! Check out the teaser for One Piece, Netflix’s live-action action-adventure series based on the most popular manga series in history.
Admittedly, I am a latecomer to TV adaptations of manga. To date, I have only watched four anime series based on manga — Forest of Piano, Japanese Tales of the Macabre, Kotaro Lives Alone (my favorite so far), and The Promised Neverland — and I have yet to read any manga (it’s on my bucket list). After watching the teaser for the live-action One Piece series, I added the show as well as the long-running anime One Piece series to my (ever-growing) to-watch list.
As with the anime version, Netflix’s live-action One Piece is based on Eiichiro Oda‘s “One Piece” manga series, Japan’s highest-selling and the most popular manga series in history, and follows a legendary high-seas adventure unlike any other.
Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom ever since he can remember. So Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece — and to become King of the Pirates! But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.
One Piece, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, August 31, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
The eight-episode pirate adventure stars Iñaki Godoy (Who Killed Sara?) as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu (Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter) as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Hunters) as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) as Usopp, and Taz Skylar (The Lazarus Project) as Sanji.
Also in the cast are Vincent Regan (Luther: The Fallen Sun), Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Morgan Davies (The Girlfriend Experience), Aidan Scott (The Power), Langley Kirkwood (Warrior), Jeff Ward (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Celeste Loots (FDR), Alexander Maniatis (The Power), McKinley Belcher III (Ozark), Craig Fairbrass (“Rise of the Footsoldier” franchise), Steven Ward (Catch Me A Killer), and Chioma Umeala (The Woman King). Additional cast will be announced in due course.
Created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix, One Piece is written, executive produced, and showrun by Matt Owens (Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Steven Maeda (Lost, CSI: Miami). Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements also executive produce.
