Netflix released today the official trailer for Miseducation, a new young adult comedy-drama series from South Africa. Check it out.
Miseducation follows Mbali Hadebe (Buntu Petse), a young, self-absorbed, first-year varsity student who falls from grace at her elite private school after her mum, a politician, is herself disgraced when she is fingered for corruption and the authorities show up during their party and start confiscating possessions. What a way to have your it-girl status nullified and be sent straight to the cancelled list.
Determined to start afresh, Mbali decides to leave the drama in Johannesburg behind by transferring to a small-town university, where she embarks on a mission to climb the social ranks in the hopes of being the stand-out, popular girl she used to be. However, she faces a new set of challenges as she quickly becomes the talk of Grahamstown University. Throw in misfit friends Jay (Prev Reddy, The Honeymoon) and Natalie (Micaela Tucker, Makoti), who can be swayed to do just about anything with the right amount of convincing, as well as new campus crush Sivu Levine (Lunga Shabalala, Love, Sex and 30 Candles), and Mbali is on her way to regaining her clout… or so she thinks.
What Mbali doesn’t count on are her haters, who will stop at nothing to bring her right back down to earth. Enter long-standing SRC president “Comrade” Caesar (Mpho Sebeng, Savage) and resident gossip girl Raeesa (Nicole Bessick, Black Mirror), who stop at nothing to expose Mbali’s shady past.
The cast includes Baby Cele (Blood & Water) and Camilla Waldman (Reyka), amongst others.
Miseducation, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Friday, September 15, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
