Netflix has announced the new drama series Death by Lightning, starring Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen.
Based on the novel Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard, Death by Lightning brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau — the man who would come to kill him.
Two-time Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Revolutionary Road, George & Tammy) stars as James Garfield, and two-time Emmy® and BAFTA Awards winner Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Stonehouse, Operation Mincemeat) stars as Charles Guiteau.
Created by Primetime Emmy® winner Mike Makowsky (Bad Education), the series is from Executive Producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (3 Body Problem, Game of Thrones), under their deal with Netflix, and Executive Producer Bernie Caulfield (3 Body Problem, Game of Thrones). Cannes Film Festival winner Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic, Silicon Valley) will direct all episodes and also serve as executive producer.
