MGM+ has announced its order for Earth Abides, a new sci-fi limited series that will star Alexander Ludwig.
Based on Earth Abides, the classic sci-fi novel by George R. Stewart, the new six-episode limited series Earth Abides will star Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, Heels, Guy Richie’s The Covenant) and start production in Vancouver on April 8.
In the story, a plague of unprecedented virulence has swept the globe. Ish (Ludwig), a brilliant but solitary young geologist living a semi-isolated life, awakens from a coma to find that there is no one left alive but him. While there are a few scattered survivors who struggle against the slide into extinction, there are no rules. Ish’s journey is to learn the difference between sanctuary and survival and to open his heart to love, if he is to find meaning in his life after the great machine of civilization has broken down.
Created by showrunner Todd Komarnicki (Sully), the series comes from MGM+ Studios. The executive producers are Oscar® winner Michael Phillips (The Sting) and Juliana Maio of Lighthouse Productions and Kearie Peak. Komarnicki also serves as writer along with Karen Janszen, Tony Spiridakis, Evan Hart, and Kyle Stephen. Set to direct the series are Bronwen Hughes (Berlin Station) (pilot and Episode 2), Rachel Leiterman (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) (Episodes 3 and 4), and Stephen Campanelli (Badland Wives) (Episodes 5 and 6).
Earth Abides is slated to premiere on MGM+ in late 2024. Stay tuned for updates.
