Hulu has set the premiere date for Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer, a new docuseries about an amazing woman who consulted for the FBI as a serial killer profiler.
That woman is Dr. Ann Burgess, a psychiatric nurse, a professor at Boston College, and the author of A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind, who studied serial killers for the FBI. Because of this work, the creative team behind the 2017-2019 mystery-crime drama series Mindhunter based the character of Dr. Wendy Carr, played by Anna Torv, directly on Dr. Burgess (although certain personal details about her were changed in the show).
Now Dr. Ann Burgess is front and center in the Hulu Original Docuseries about herself — Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer — which reveals the crime-hunting innovations she made that changed law enforcement and history itself. To stop a serial killer, you need to think like one. That is precisely what Dr. Burgess did, and in the process became the mastermind behind the development of modern serial-killer profiling.
With unprecedented access to Dr. Burgess, the three-part docuseries tells her story and of her compassion for victims, which put her at the center of solving America’s most infamous true-crime cases. From the widely-known Ed Kemper and Ted Bundy, to lesser-known cases like the Ski Mask Rapist, Burgess investigated and studied the victims and damaged psyches of their attackers, and put two halves of the same story together to catch a killer.
Largely an unsung heroine until now, Dr. Burgess impacted not only the FBI, she also radically championed the plight of women in America.
Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer, a Hulu Original, premieres in the US on Thursday, July 11, exclusively on Hulu. (You can add it to your watchlist now.)
The series is directed by Abby Fuller and produced for Hulu by Campfire Studios in association with Lewellen Pictures. Ross M. Dinerstein, Elle Fanning, Dakota Fanning, Rebecca Halpern, Lesley Chilcott, Dani Sloane, Rebecca Evans, and Abby Fuller are executive producers. Co-executive producers are Ross Girard and Mark McCune. Dr. Ann Burgess is a consulting producer.
