Set in 1979, Asura is a Japanese slice-of-life drama series whose theme of universal family dynamics resonates across cultures.

The story follows the four Takezawa sisters — ikebana teacher Tsunako, housewife Makiko, librarian Takiko, and waitress Sakiko — who get together for the first time in a while on a winter day. Takiko shares that she suspects their aging father, Kotaro, has a lover and child. While her sisters find this unbelievable, they promise to keep it from their mother, Fuji. Still, their emotional turmoil brings to light conflicts and secrets that lurk in the women’s lives.

The series stars Rie Miyazawa (The Naked Director) as Tsunako, Machiko Ono (A Family) as Makiko, Yu Aoi (“Rurouni Kenshin” films) as Takiko, and Suzu Hirose (Hold My Hand at Twilight) as Sakiko.

Asura premieres globally on Thursday, January 9, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

Based on the original work and screenplay of the late Kuniko Mukoda, the series is written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Our Little Sister) and produced by Yasuo Yagi.
