Horror fans, Host is a new film from Thailand that will let you get your spook on before, during, and after Halloween.
Host is based on the Thai folklore of Mae Sue, a benevolent guardian spirit of newborns, but reimagines the traditional story as a chilling supernatural horror.
The movie follows Ing (Baipor-Thitiya Jirapornsilp, Love Stuck, You & Me & Me, Not Friends), who gets sent to an all-girls reform school on a remote island. She quickly learns that the only rule at the mysterious school is simple: total obedience to Miss Prisana (Narinthorn Na Bangchang, Moonlight Chicken, Faceless Love), the principal and sole adult on the island. With little outside contact, the school operates under a strict hierarchy, with queen bee Aim (Perth-Veerinsara Tungkitsuvanich, Love in the Moonlight, Attack 13), Miss Prisana’s pet and enforcer, at the top, and new girl Ing at the bottom.
Soon after her arrival, strange, disturbing, and inexplicable incidents begin happening to the girls on school grounds, and Ing always seems to be at the center of them. This gives Aim plenty of reasons to blame Ing for the unsettling events and to further isolate her from the rest of the students. The only people who will still speak to Ing are Ploy, a shy fellow Northerner who is also frustrated with Aim’s unchecked power, and Pin, the handsome young boatman who ferried Ing to the island. Although Pin isn’t a student at the school, he is similarly stuck on the island; his boat was destroyed during a storm that blew through right after he brought Ing here. His friendship with Ing riles up Aim, whose jealousy bubbles over into violence with supernatural consequences.
As confrontations and coincidences begin to mount, even Ing begins to wonder: Is she a victim of these supernatural occurrences, or could she actually be the source of them?
Host, a Thai Amazon Original Movie, premieres globally on Thursday, October 23, exclusively on Prime Video.
Directed by Pokpong-Pairach Khumwan (Girl from Nowhere, Siam Square), the film costars Jump-Pisitpol Ekaphongpisit (The Cliche, Not Friends), Weeraya Zhang (One Year, The Fabric), Nutkitta Poonsukwattana, and Sanutcha Janchoom.
