Netflix has set the premiere date for The Abandons, a new western series starring Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey.
Peak TV might be over, but we could be in the midst of a new golden age of westerns (and neo-westerns), only on television instead of films. From Yellowstone and its prequels, sequels, and spin-offs, to American Primeval, Billy the Kid, Elkhorn, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the genre has seen a resurgence over the past several years, thrilling old fans of the genre and bringing new audiences to it.
Joining those titles is The Abandons, a brand-new series created and written by three-time Primetime Emmy® nominee Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C., The Bastard Executioner).
Set in 1854 in Washington Territory, the ten-episode series stars Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, The Fall, Sex Education) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Beacon 23, 300: Rise of an Empire) in the lead roles of Constance Van Ness and Fiona Nolan, respectively, strong-willed matriarchs of two very different families.
Fiona’s is a found family of orphans and outcasts bound by love and necessity, and she will stop at nothing to protect them. Constance’s family is one of wealth and privilege bound by blood. She inherited a mining fortune from her husband and will stop at nothing to protect it and the family’s power. The fates of these haves and have-nots are linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love, and a piece of land with silver underneath — in a frontier where justice is just out of reach.
The Abandons, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, December 4, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
