Apple TV announced today The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina, a new unscripted culinary series fronted and executive produced by Awkwafina.
The first time I saw Awkwafina was in 2018 in Crazy Rich Asians. While the film was okay, I thought she rocked her role in it. (She was also in that year’s Ocean’s Eight, which was released a couple months before CRA, but I skipped it. Still haven’t watched it.)
Anyhoo, in The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina, the talented Emmy®- and Golden Globe® Award-winning Awkwafina (Quiz Lady, The Farewell) embarks on a deeply-personal cross-country journey as she explores contemporary Asian American cuisine, starting with her family’s remarkable legacy.
Born Nora Lum, her family ran Lum’s, the iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York, the very first in the area’s now-thriving Chinatown. But despite growing up in the family business, she can’t cook. At all. She could ruin an instant ramen.
Said Awkwafina:
“I’ve never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me. Food has been a huge part of my family’s history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity.”
With help from acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs, and her full-of-characters family, Awkwafina travels the country to explore what it takes to master Asian food in the kitchen and whether she will ultimately reimagine Lum’s legacy for today.
A production of Twofour for Apple TV, the eight-episode series is executive produced by Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies.
