Based on the best-selling “Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries” novels published by Guideposts, Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries is a new eight-episode series starring Galadriel Stineman (The Middle, The Kids Are Alright), who is also a producer on the show. She plays Cheryl Cooper, a woman whose devastating breakup after a years-long engagement prompts her to pull up stakes from Chicago and move to the small Amish town of Sugarcreek, Ohio. A drastic move, yes, but one billed as an “escape” by her Aunt Mitzi (Candace Kirkpatrick, Vindication).

We meet Cheryl in the telefilm Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries: Blessings in Disguise, which is adapted from Nancy Mehl’s book of the same name, with additional material from Elizabeth Ludwig’s book, Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries: Where Hope Dwells. In Sugarcreek, Cheryl’s a big city gal struggling to fit into small-town life alongside her Amish neighbors. Interestingly, she uncovers an unsettling secret that could disrupt life in this close-knit community. But as Cheryl begins to delve into and ultimately solve the mystery, she finds community and even the potential of new love. (Stream it on UP Faith & Family. The Spanish-dubbed version is available for streaming on The Roku Channel.)

Now, on to Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries, the series. Cheryl is still managing a gift shop in Sugarcreek, still getting drawn into one mystery after another, and soon realizes that her sharp-as-a-tack instincts and outsider perspective are exactly what this place needs. With the help of the unlikely friendships she forges with her Amish neighbors, including Naomi Miller (Denise Gossett, The Office) and Naomi’s son, Levi (Kevin Joy, Truth Be Told), Cheryl uncovers more than just answers: She begins to piece together a new sense of home and belonging.

Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries premieres in the US on Thursday, April 23, at 9pm ET, on UPtv.

Costars include Riley Beeson, Lance Nichols (Treme), and Ryan O’Quinn (Alias).
