Since its first broadcast in 1995, The Files of Young Kindaichi has been a mega-hit in Japan and beyond, accumulating fans across generations and borders. It is based on the mystery manga series The Kindaichi Case files, which follows the crime-solving adventures of high-school student and private detective Hajime Kindaichi, who investigates murder mysteries, often with a supernatural element, with his best friend, Miyuki Nanase, along with Tokyo Police homicide inspector Isamu Kenmochi.

There have been several live-action and anime television and film adaptations of the manga, of which this ten-episode series is considered the fifth live-action one. It re-imagines selected episodes from earlier shows, giving old and new Young Kindaichi stories a contemporary perspective.

The main cast includes Shunsuke Michieda (My Love Mix-Up!) as Hajime Kindaichi, Moka Kamishiraishi (Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom) as Miyuki Nanase, and Ikki Sawamura (Night Doctor) as Inspector Isamu Kenmochi.

(Although the trailer below is in Hindi, the key imagery is creepy as all get-out.)

The Files of Young Kindaichi, a Hulu Original series — available in the original Japanese with English subtitles and the English-dubbed version — is now streaming in the US on Hulu.
