Based on the book Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America’s Opioid Epidemic by Barry Meier and the New Yorker Magazine article “The Family That Built an Empire of Pain” by Patrick Radden Keefe, Painkiller explores some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America.

Painkiller‘s fictionalized retelling of events highlights the stories of the perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin — examining the crime, accountability, and systems that have repeatedly failed hundreds of thousands of Americans.

The six-episode limited series stars Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America, Orange is the New Black), Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Manchester by the Sea), Taylor Kitsch (The Terminal List, True Detective), Dina Shihabi (Archive 81, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), West Duchovny (Saint X, The Magicians), and John Rothman (The Blacklist, Bull).

Guest stars include Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jack Mulhern (Mare of Easttown), Sam Anderson (Justified), Ana Cruz Kayne (Barbie), Brian Markinson (A Million Little Things), Noah Harpster (For All Mankind), John Ales (Euphoria), Johnny Sneed (Parks and Recreation), and Tyler Ritter (Arrow).

Painkiller, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, August 10, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

Two-time Emmy® nominee Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) directs the series. Barry Meier serves as Consulting Producer. The executive producers are Eric Newman, Pete Berg, Alex Gibney, and series creators/writers/showrunners Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.
