Black Cake (US)

Based on The New York Times-bestselling novel Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson, this eight-episode series is a decades-spanning family drama wrapped in a murder mystery. In the late 1960s, a runaway bride named Covey (Mia Isaac, Not Okay) disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared either drowned or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder. In present-day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett (Chipo Chung, Silo) loses her battle with cancer, leaving her two estranged children a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America. Based on the novel The Female Supporting Role by Qi Yue Li, this romantic fantasy drama centers on a hard-working, modern-day young woman (Zhou Ye, Word of Honor), who wakes up and finds herself in the novel that she was reading all night. Now in the body of a vicious character in the story, she must cope with having a traitorous father and a playboy brother. What’s more, she (as the character) did all sorts of bad things earlier in the story, so her intention to ensure that her character stays alive until the end entails a long and difficult road.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves (US)

The first season of this new standalone anthology series, which reveals the untold stories of iconic lawmen and outlaws who have impacted history, follows the journey of Bass Reeves (Emmy® Award nominee David Oyelowo, Nightingale, Selma) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting more than 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.

Daddies on Request: Season 2 (Mexico)

In the new season of this comedy-drama, it’s been a year since California (Farah Justiniani, La Herencia) reunited with her mother, Itzel (Fátima Molina, Misfortune), who returned to Mexico City, gave testimony, and then embarked on a trip with her daughter across Mexico in the ice cream van to get to know each other again. As the crooks’ trial approaches, Itzel and California go to Mexico City to see Morgan (Michael Ronda, Control Z), Diego (Lalo Brito, Kelly’s Mashup), and Miguel (Jorge Blanco, Violetta), who work their day jobs and come together at night to keep the band’s dream alive.

This free concert by megahit K-pop band BTS was attended by 50,000+ fans and filmed in October 2022 at the Asiad Main Stadium in Busan, South Korea, as part of the city’s World Expo 2030 bid.
