Apple TV+ announced today the global premiere date for The Big Cigar, a new limited drama series starring André Holland.
Based on the article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman, The Big Cigar chronicles the story of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton’s escape to Cuba.
The six-episode series tells the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: It’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey P. Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan — one involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong in every way possible. And somehow, it’s all (mostly) true.
Starring as Huey P. Newton is award-winning actor André Holland (Moonlight, Selma, The Knick, Castle Rock), who leads the ensemble cast, which includes Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle), Tiffany Boone (The Chi), P. J. Byrne (Big Little Lies), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Rebecca Dalton (The Wedding Planners), Olli Haaskivi (Oppenheimer), Jordane Christie (The Haunting of Hill House), and Glynn Turman (Black Cake).
The Big Cigar premieres globally with two episodes on Friday, May 17, followed by new episodes every Friday through June 14.
A production of Warner Bros. Television, the series is showrun by NAACP Image Award winner Janine Sherman Barrois (Claws, The Kings of Napa), with Jim Hecht (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) writing the show’s first episode, and Oscar® nominee Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Crash) serving as director and executive producer on the first two episodes. The executive producers are Barrois, Hecht, Bearman, and Joshua Davis and Arthur Spector (Little America) through their production company Epic.
