Netflix has announced its first collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Park Chan-wook on the South Korean historical drama War and Revolt (wt).
In his first film collaboration with Netflix, globally-acclaimed and BAFTA Film Award-winning filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, Snowpiercer) serves as producer and co-writer on the historical drama War and Revolt (wt).
Set against the chaos of war, War and Revolt (wt) takes viewers on a gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries. The film stars Gang Dong-won (Peninsula, Secret Reunion) as the enigmatic and formidable Cheon-young and Park Jeong-min (Deliver Us from Evil, Hellbound) as the conflicted Jong-ryeo.
Cheon-young, who possesses remarkable martial prowess that defies his humble origins as a slave, struggles to break free from the chains of servitude. Jong-ryeo is Cheon-young’s former master and scion of Joseon’s most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes the personal guard of King Seonjo, which leads to a heart-wrenching reunion with Cheon-young. Torn between friendship and duty, Jong-ryeo ultimately faces his own downfall.
Additional cast members include: Cha Seung-won (Our Blues) as King Seonjo, a monarch who abandons his people at the onset of the Japanese invasion, only to seek redemption by restoring his royal authority after the war; Kim Shin-rock (Hellbound) as Bumdong, a member of the civilian militia who fearlessly defies social norms and confronts any obstacles that cross her path; Jin Seon-kyu (Kingdom) as Kim Ja-ryeong, a civilian militia leader descended from the traditional ruling class, who emerges as an inspiring force amid the chaos of the invasion; and Jung Sung-ill (The Glory) as the intimidating Japanese warlord Genshin, who recognizes Cheon-young’s extraordinary swordsmanship.
A production of Moho Film in collaboration with Semicolon Studio, War and Revolt (wt) is directed by Kim Sang-man (Midnight F.M.), produced by Park Chan-wook, and written by Shin Chul and Park Chan-wook.
