Archive X: Unexplained Phenomena (US)
Hosted by Professor Jeffrey J. The Last First: Winter K2 (UK-US)
In this documentary, director Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, harrowing, and moving story that takes an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing and its changing culture. Focusing on a 2021 expedition, the film follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara, a party of mountaineers who set out to be the first to summit K2 in the winter, when the mountain’s conditions are the cruelest. Cannibal Poet (Mexico)
This true-crime docuseries delves into the case of José Luis Calva Zepeda, known in the media as the “Cannibal of Guerrero.” The investigation revisits one of Mexico’s most complex cases, not only due to the brutality of the femicides linked to him but also because of his personal history: a man who wrote poetry and plays, and led a life marked by romantic breakups and episodes of deep depression, while harboring a violent side that went unnoticed until it was too late. His arrest in 2007, which came after the dismembered body of his partner, Alejandra Galeana, was discovered in his apartment, also revealed that he had attempted suicide more than once since adolescence.
Although media narratives branded him a “cannibal,” that specific allegation was never substantiated by the authorities. What was proven were the femicides, for which he received a 50-year prison sentence that he never served, as he died in prison just months later.
