BritBox has set the North American premiere date for Season 2 of the award-winning South African crime thriller series Reyka.
Nominated for two International Emmy® Awards and winning four South African Film and Television Awards in 2022, including the latter’s Best Actress-TV Drama award for series star Kim Engelbrecht (Raised by Wolves, The Flash, Dominion), South African psychological crime thriller Reyka is returning to screens in the US and Canada in a couple of weeks.
Set against the backdrop of the Durban Harbour, the largest port in Africa, Season 2 of Reyka opens roughly six months after the events in Season 1. Brilliant but flawed criminologist Reyka Gama (Kim Engelbrecht) is seconded to the Durban Harbour Police Station, where she’s building the profile of a killer who targets couples at a coastal lookout spot called Lover’s Lane. Although the assailant is cold and clinical to male victims, they show remorse, even protectiveness, over female victims. The pressure is on Reyka to solve the case quickly, as the murders are making headline news across the country, and scores of delegates will be descending on the city soon for the province’s International Water Conference.
There’s more. Beneath all of her work stress, Reyka is still haunted by her past — tormented by the abuse she suffered at the hands of Angus Speelman (Iain Glen, Game of Thrones, Jack Taylor), the twisted Scottish immigrant farmer who kidnapped her when she was a young girl. Although Angus is now institutionalized in a facility for sex offenders, Reyka’s memories of the horrors he inflicted are still. right. there. Yet despite her precarious mental state and complex personal life, Reyka is determined to catch Durban’s latest predator.
Working alongside Reyka is her new partner, Ayanda Jali (Samkelo Ndlovu, iNkaba, Freedom). A tough and courageous detective with strong moral values and integrity, Ayanda becomes Reyka’s friend and confidant and helps her to navigate her cases and personal struggles.
Reyka: Season 2, a BritBox US and Canada Original, premieres as an eight-episode binge on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in both territories on BritBox, where the series is exclusive in the US.
The Season 2 cast includes Pallance Dladla (Isibaya, Dam) as Zee, Ayanda’s boyfriend; Frank Rautenbach (Lioness, Warrior) as Captain Leon Lombard, head of the Search and Rescue Unit; and Lemogang Tsipa (The Boy Who Harnessed to Wind, Troy: Fall of a City) as handyman Tokkie.
Also joining the cast are Sello Maake Ncube (Madiba), Joey Rasdien (The Umbrella Men), Zane Meas (Ludik), Tamara Skye, Kira Wilkinson (Cape Town), Wayne van Rooyen (Inconceivable), Deon Lotz (Abraham Lincoln), Trudy van Rooy (The Book of Negroes), and Nicky Rebelo (Black Sails).
