Netflix has set the global premiere date for Tomorrow and I (stylized as Tomorrow and i), a new sci-fi drama anthology series from Thailand. Check out the trailer.
Ah, technology. It has its good points and bad points, from robots performing life-saving surgeries, to social media negatively impacting individuals’ sense of self-esteem.
The key question raised in Tomorrow and I is this: What would happen if technology disrupts morality and traditional Thai customs? Possible answers are explored in the series’ four standalone episodes, which probe thought-provoking and philosophical themes and pressing contemporary issues in a reimagined Thailand of the future, including cloning, prostitution, Buddhism, and the global warming crisis.
“Black Sheep”
In the series opener, the life of a Thai astronaut is tragically cut short in an accident, and extraordinary efforts are made to bring her back through cloning. For viewers, this raises (or could raise) questions regarding our beliefs about karma and the moral implications of altering fate. The episode stars Boy-Pakorn Chatborrirak (Burning Jealousy), Ink-Waruntorn Paonil (Snap), and Poyd-Treechada Hongsyok.
“Paradistopia”
Starring Violette Wautier (Endless Love) and Timethai Dharmthai, this episode finds a paradise on earth that challenges society’s taboos. It is one where all sexual desires are fulfilled by intelligent sex robots trained by national-level sex experts.
“Buddha Data”
The third episode tackles a topic deeply rooted in Thai society: religion. When ancient beliefs accumulated over thousands of years collide with futuristic AI, it begets the question of whether traditional ways can coexist (peacefully, if at all) with advanced technology. It stars Ray Macdonald (Phobia 2), Aelm Thavornsiri, and Pongsatorn Jongwilas (How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies).
“Octopus Girl”
Closing the series is this episode, set in a world facing unending rains, a consequence of the global warming crisis. The story follows two young best friends living in a neglected slum in a Thailand where those in power prioritize personal gain over public welfare. As a waterborne pandemic ravages their community, it remains to be seen if they will survive, and if they do, how? The cast includes Tangkwa-Chananticha Chaipa (Jack and Joker), Minna-Wanichaya Pornpanarittichai, and Pingpong-Thongchai Thongkuntom (Love at First Night).
Tomorrow and I, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Wednesday, December 4, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
