A nominee for Best Afrikaans TV Series at the 2025 National Film & TV Awards South Africa, Cousins (aka Niggies, which means “cousins” in Afrikaans) tracks the nearly two-decades-long effort to bring the perpetrators of a 1966 double murder to justice.

The series is based on the true story of Issie Fourie and Petro Nel, twelve-year-old cousins who go swimming in the quiet town of Odendaalsrus in the Free State before school starts up again. When they don’t return home by sunset, the town begins searching for them. Unfortunately, they discover too late that the two preteens had been murdered.

Until now, nothing newsworthy had ever happened in Odendaalsrus, so this crime shocks the townspeople to their core and captures the attention of all of South Africa. But the local police are not up to the task of investigating the case.

As the families grieve and try to come to terms with their loss, Issie’s brother, André, decides he wants to be a detective when he reaches adulthood, throwing himself headlong into a fight for justice. It took him eighteen years to get it.

The cast includes Janru Steenkamp, Beer Adriaanse (Recipes for Love and Murder), Carel Nel (Raised by Wolves), Albert Pretorious (Donkerbos), Roeline Daneel (Reyka), Jane de Wet (Trompoppie), Tinarie van Wyk Loots (Desert Rose), Lane Vertue (Koek), Izebella Louw (Koek), and Erica Wessels (Waterfront), amongst others.

Cousins premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, July 7, exclusively on MHz Choice and its digital channels, including MHz Choice on Prime Channels.
