HBO has announced the premiere date for The Sympathizer, a new espionage thriller limited series.
Based on The Sympathizer, Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, named one of Time magazine’s 100 best mystery and thriller books of all time, HBO’s The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.
The seven-episode limited series stars Hoa Xuande (Last King of the Cross, Top of the Lake), Fred Nguyen Khan (Transplant), Toan Le (Simply Fobulous), Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen (The Rich Woman), Kieu Chinh (The Joy Luck Club), Duy Nguyen (Ghosts), Alan Trong (Animal Kingdom), Emmy® winner Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), and Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), who plays multiple roles.
The Sympathizer, an HBO Original, premieres Sunday, April 14, at 9pm ET/PT, on HBO, with streaming available on Max and its digital channels, including Max on Prime Channels.
The series is co-showrun, executive produced, and written by Park Chan-wook (Snowpiercer, The Little Drummer Girl), who also serves as director (Episodes 1-3), and Don McKellar (Saving Hope, Sensitive Skin). The executive producers are A24; Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey; Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media; Kim Ly; Ron Schmidt; Viet Thanh Nguyen; and Jisun Back for Moho Film.
Also directing are Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener) (Episode 4) and Marc Munden (The Third Day) (Episodes 5-7). The writing team includes Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King, and Tea Ho.
