Netflix has set the premiere date for One Year to Live, Buy a Man, a new romantic drama film billed as “an unexpected Cinderella story for grown-ups.”
Based on the novel of the same name by Toriko Yoshikawa, One Year to Live, Buy a Man stars Kô Shibasaki (Galileo, Orange Days, Good Luck!!) and Eiji Akaso (Gimbap and Onigiri, Kyojo, Pending Train) in the lead roles of this charming, humor-filled drama that invites audiences to reconsider the brilliance of life.
Yui Katakura (Kô Shibasaki) is a 40-year-old single woman who lives to save money. It’s more than a hobby; it’s an obsession. As she diligently builds a nest egg for her retirement, she is a no to romance and marriage, seeing them as bad investments and instead focusing on those that will bring her a good return.
For someone whose life revolves around saving money, taking advantage of freebies is a no-brainer. Except she gets unexpected news after she gets a free cancer screening: She has one year left to live.
Curiously, instead of being overcome by fear, she feels a strange sense of freedom in the midst of the shock. If she is going to die soon, she doesn’t need to save anymore!
Then Sena Yoshitaka (Eiji Akaso), a handsome, pink-haired host with a complicated past, waltzes into Yui’s life and casually asks to borrow money from her. Even more curiously, she agrees. But this isn’t a straightforward loan. Rather, she “buys” him for ¥720,000.
So begins Yui’s first-ever adventure in extravagance, which leads to an unexpected turn in her and Sena’s odd relationship.
